Nottinghamshire's fast bowler Josh Tongue made a strong impression on the first day of their County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, taking 5-91 from 22 overs. Warwickshire's lower order made a late recovery to finish the day on 375-8, with Ed Barnard scoring an unbeaten 134 and Chris Woakes contributing 64.
Meanwhile, Sussex had a strong start to their match against Yorkshire at Headingley, with John Simpson scoring an unbeaten century and Tom Price adding 93. Jack White was the standout bowler for Yorkshire with 3-42, while Joe Root took a catch and bowled five overs of off-spin for 18 runs. In another match, Paul Walter batted patiently for almost five hours to score 101 as Essex reached 325-6 against Surrey at the Kia Oval. Surrey fought back with six wickets in the second half of the day, including four inside 17 overs from the 71st over. Glamorgan had a positive start to their match against Leicestershire, finishing 334-7 thanks to a steadying 126-run partnership between Kiran Carlson and Sean Dickson. Zak Crawley's hopes of retaining his place as England's Test opener suffered a further blow as he was dismissed for 27 in Kent's Division Two clash with Worcestershire.
Kent were ultimately bowled out for 196, with Worcestershire 94-1 in reply by stumps on day one. Marcus Harris defied Durham's pursuit for wickets with his second century of the season for Lancashire, while England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir took wickets for Derbyshire before Miles Hammond engineered a Gloucestershire fightback.
