Head coach Sam Burgess has disclosed that Warrington Wolves captain George Williams may have participated in his last game for the team, as he is slated to undergo neck surgery. Williams, who is in the final year of his contract with the Wolves, is expected to return to the NRL in 2027 with the Dolphins. The injury occurred during Warrington's recent loss to the Catalans Dragons in France. Following Warrington's 23-6 win over Wigan, Burgess elaborated on the injury, stating that Williams will have surgery within the next two weeks and that the recovery time can vary from three months to a year.
With only five months remaining in the Super League season, it is uncertain whether Williams will don the primrose and blue again. Burgess emphasized the need to prioritize Williams' long-term health, saying, 'It's quite a sensitive issue with his neck.
We are mindful of that and are not going to rush anything.' England head coach Brian McDermott, who had planned to retain Williams as captain, may now be forced to make a significant decision depending on the half-back's recovery time, particularly with the World Cup in Australia approaching in October.
