The R&A has announced a significant increase in the prize fund for the 2026 AIG Women's Open, with the total purse now standing at $10 million. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the prize money has been increased.
The world's top golfers will compete for a share of the $10 million pot at Royal Lytham & St Annes in July. Additionally, it has been revealed that the 2028 edition of the AIG Women's Open will take place at Sunningdale's Old Course, while Royal St George's will host the 2027 event. According to Mark Darbon, the chief executive of the R&A, Sunningdale will provide an exceptional venue for the championship. The 2026 AIG Women's Open will also celebrate its 50th anniversary, with the inaugural tournament having taken place in 1967 with a prize fund of $673.31.
This year's event will feature increased broadcast coverage, with fans able to watch 20% more live coverage throughout the week on Sky Sports. The early broadcast windows will provide fans with a glimpse into the early starters' progress, while the main coverage will commence from 1pm to 7pm from July 29 to August 2. Darbon emphasized the importance of broadcast coverage in achieving the championship's ambitions, stating that the AIG Women's Open now offers more linear television broadcast hours in the UK and US than any other women's golf championship, giving fans unparalleled access to the world's best players.
