Renowned golfer Bryson DeChambeau has disclosed that negotiations for his LIV Golf contract are currently underway, with the two-time major champion expressing optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. This development comes amidst ongoing speculation surrounding the financial future of the Saudi-backed golf league. DeChambeau initially joined LIV Golf in June 2022, describing the move as a strategic business decision at the time.
His existing contract is set to expire at the end of the 2026 season, prompting questions about whether he would choose to re-sign with LIV. Previous reports suggested that DeChambeau might be seeking a new deal valued at approximately $500 million, despite rumors about potential funding cuts for LIV Golf. The 32-year-old golfer remains confident that an agreement will be reached. In a recent statement, DeChambeau mentioned, "We're still working on a potential contract.
I haven't given up on that, and I think there will be a solution." He emphasized his commitment to making the league successful, citing his responsibility to the team and the effort he has invested in LIV Golf. DeChambeau's comments follow the announcement by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) that LIV Golf was not included in its four-year investment strategy, sparking concerns about the league's future.
However, a spokesperson for LIV Golf denied reports of a "secret emergency meeting" to discuss the situation, stating that key officials were participating in a pro-am event instead. DeChambeau, who was forced to withdraw from a recent event due to a wrist injury, expressed his determination to help LIV Golf continue to function, highlighting the value he sees in franchise golf. He also mentioned his commitment to supporting younger golfers who have joined the league, naming several players, including Michael LaSasso, Caleb Surratt, Josele Ballester, and David Puig. DeChambeau, along with other prominent golfers like Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, and Dustin Johnson, has been instrumental in promoting LIV Golf.
The league's representatives have ambitious plans, aiming for each team and individual to become self-sufficient and profitable, with hopes of generating $13 billion in the future. Katie O'Reilly, EVP of team business operations at LIV Golf, stated earlier this year, "Our goal is to build $13 billion franchises.
That is our goal. Are we there yet? No. But right now, we are building the foundation for that." LIV Golf has reportedly generated $1 billion globally since its inception, with LIV Golf Adelaide making $81.46 million.
The league's chief executive, Scott O'Neil, assured that the tour is "funded through the season" and that LIV chiefs would "work like crazy" to keep it going.
