Rangers manager Danny Röhl hopes captain James Tavernier can end his 11-year stint at the club on a high note by lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy. Tavernier, 34, announced his departure from the club on Wednesday. During his time at Rangers, he has scored 144 goals in 562 appearances and led the team to the Scottish title in 2021 and the Europa League final in 2022, as well as winning the Scottish Cup and League Cup.
With five post-split fixtures remaining, Rangers trail leaders Hearts by one point and are two points ahead of Celtic ahead of their home game against Motherwell on Sunday. Röhl praised Tavernier as a 'legend of the club' and expressed his desire for the captain to have a memorable farewell. 'For big players, a big goodbye is fitting, and the biggest goodbye would be to leave with a title,' Röhl said.
Tavernier's decision to leave the club came as a surprise, just two days after he stated he was willing to wait until the summer to decide his future. Röhl acknowledged that he would have liked Tavernier to stay for another year but respected the captain's decision.
The German coach emphasized the importance of focusing on the remaining five games and giving Tavernier the 'incredible goodbye' he deserves.
