Gloucester handed Exeter a significant setback in their pursuit of a playoff spot in the Gallagher Premiership, securing a thrilling 34-31 victory at Kingsholm. The hosts, who currently occupy eighth place, bolstered their chances of qualifying for the Investec Champions Cup with a bonus-point win, courtesy of tries from Max Llewellyn and Will Trenholm, as well as a score from Tomos Williams, and three conversions plus a penalty from George Barton.
Despite a valiant effort, Exeter came up short, with their attempts to gain ground in the physicality stakes thwarted by Gloucester's determined performance. The visitors' frustrations were compounded by a red card issued to flanker Ethan Roots in the game's final play, following an off-the-ball incident.
Exeter's loss saw them finish the match with two losing bonus points, leaving them in fourth place in the table, narrowly ahead of fifth-placed Bristol. The Chiefs had initially shown promise, with a try from Ross Vintcent after just 54 seconds, but Gloucester responded strongly, with Llewellyn scoring a try that Barton converted. The hosts continued to assert their dominance, with Williams exploiting a gap in Exeter's defense to score, before Llewellyn claimed his second try, courtesy of Ben Loader's impressive approach work. Exeter managed to engineer a response through Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, but Gloucester struck again, with Trenholm scoring from close range, to leave the visitors trailing at the interval.
The second half saw Exeter strive for consistency, but they were ultimately undone by Gloucester's relentless pressure, with Trenholm scoring his second try, before a penalty try and a late touchdown from Henry Slade set up a tense finale. However, Gloucester held out, despite being reduced to 14 men following a yellow card issued to prop Dane Bieuler, to secure a hard-fought victory.
