St Helens have secured a joint top position in the Super League standings, level with Leeds Rhinos, following a narrow 18-12 victory over Wakefield Trinity at home on Saturday. The Saints dominated the first half, initially having a try by Owen Dagnall ruled out, but then taking the lead when Dagnall set up Jake Davies for a try.
They extended their lead with a second try, courtesy of Jonny Lomax and Kyle Feldt, and further increased the gap to 16-0 by halftime after Harry Robertson's interception led to a try by Tristan Sailor. Wakefield managed to get on the scoreboard in the 55th minute with a try by Tyson Smoothy, capitalizing on a Saints knock-on.
Jackson Hastings then kicked a penalty to widen the Saints' lead, which proved crucial as Caius Faatili scored for Wakefield. St Helens coach Paul Rowley acknowledged the team's performance was not polished and expressed his discomfort with the second half.
Wakefield coach Daryl Powell attributed the first-half tries to defensive lapses but praised his team's aggression in the second half. In another match, Hull KR revitalized their playoff hopes with a resounding 48-12 win over Bradford, thanks in part to Mikey Lewis' four tries and Rhyse Martin's flawless kicking performance.
