Matt Fitzpatrick has secured his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late stumble to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had begun the final day with a three-shot lead at Harbour Town Golf Links and initially looked in control, extending his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes.
However, Scheffler mounted a late surge, closing with consecutive birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure in the play-off, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole and sinking the birdie to claim his second RBC Heritage title in four years. Fitzpatrick's win lifts him to a career-high world ranking of number three and makes him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour wins in the same season, following in the footsteps of Sir Nick Faldo, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald. The victory came after a dramatic final day, which saw Fitzpatrick and Scheffler engage in a tight battle.
Fitzpatrick had started strongly, birdieing the first hole, but Scheffler stayed in touch, eventually cutting the deficit to one shot with a birdie at the 16th. Fitzpatrick's bogey at the last hole set up the play-off, where he ultimately emerged victorious. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, following his close second place at The Masters.
Si Woo Kim finished third, two strokes behind the leaders, after a final-round 68. Fitzpatrick will now partner his brother Alex Fitzpatrick at the upcoming Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event, as he looks to build on his recent success.
