Bristol leapfrogged Exeter into the top four of the Gallagher Premiership with a resounding 52-19 victory over bottom-placed Newcastle at Kingston Park. The win, however, came at a cost for Bristol, with several players picking up injuries, including Joe Batley, who was a late withdrawal, and Rich Lane, who limped off after scoring the opening try. Other casualties included Gabriel Oghre, Benjamin Grondona, and Noah Heward, who all hobbled off with injuries.
Despite the setbacks, Bristol dominated the match, with Benhard Janse van Rensburg scoring a brace and Harry Thacker sealing an emphatic win with a late try. The victory puts Bristol one point ahead of play-off rivals Exeter, who can regain fourth spot when they face Gloucester on Sunday.
This was Newcastle's 13th defeat in 14 matches, as they struggled to contain Bristol's attacking prowess. Former Newcastle centre Matias Moroni played a key role in Bristol's win, using his vision and skill to create scoring opportunities. The Argentinian's clever chip and recollection set up Lane's opening try, and his instinctive pass allowed Lane to score.
Lane's replacement, Kalaveti Ravouvou, made an immediate impact, running in on the diagonal with his first touch after Heward collected a loose ball and charged through a gap. Newcastle eventually got on the board through Adam Brocklebank, but Bristol continued to dominate, with Tom Jordan showing his pace to round Brocklebank and dot down.
Jordan added the third of his four conversions to give Bristol a 21-5 lead, and the visitors continued to push forward, with Heward darting over for the bonus-point try after the interval. Moroni also touched down on the left, and Janse van Rensburg deservedly got on the scoresheet, shrugging off challenges to dive over. James Williams took on kicking duties to put Bristol 40-12 ahead, and although Newcastle scored through Josh Hodge and Christian Wade, Bristol's victory was never in doubt.
Janse van Rensburg scored his second try, and a late maul from the lineout led to Thacker touching down, with Williams adding the extras to bring up Bristol's half-century of points.
