Northampton Saints managed to maintain their position at the top of the Premiership Rugby standings with a nail-biting 41-38 win over Bath. Fin Smith sealed the victory for the Saints with a last-minute penalty.
The match was filled with drama, as a heavily changed Bath side pushed the Saints to their limits, despite resting several key players ahead of their upcoming Champions Cup semi-final. The Saints' captain, Fraser Dingwall, played a crucial role in the opening try, which was scored by Fin Smith in the third minute. Bath quickly leveled the score through a try from Louie Hennessey, courtesy of a long pass from Ciaran Donoghue. The match continued to ebb and flow, with both teams creating numerous scoring opportunities.
Tommy Freeman scored a hat-trick for the Saints, while Bath's Will Butt and Arthur Green also made significant contributions. The visitors reduced the deficit to five points early in the second half, but the Saints responded with further tries from Ollie Sleightholme and Freeman. Bath secured a bonus point of their own when Tom De Glanville scored following a break by Dan Frost. The match seesawed, with the scores locked at 31-31 with an hour played, before Freeman's third try appeared to have sealed the win for the Saints.
However, Bath equalized once more through Kepu Tuipulotu, only for Smith's late penalty to snatch victory for the Saints. In other Premiership news, Saracens kept their playoff hopes alive with a 19-15 win over Leicester, thanks in part to a stunning try from Noah Caluori.
Meanwhile, Sale boosted their own season with an eight-try demolition of Harlequins, in what may have been Joe Launchbury's final game before retirement.
