Matt Fitzpatrick emerged victorious in the RBC Heritage, overcoming a late stumble to defeat world No 1 Scottie Scheffler in a play-off. Fitzpatrick had started the day with a three-shot lead and initially extended his advantage with birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler mounted a strong challenge, closing with consecutive birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole.
The Englishman regained his composure, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first play-off hole and sinking the birdie to secure his second RBC Heritage win in four years. The victory propelled Fitzpatrick to a career-high world No 3 ranking and made him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour wins in the same season. Fitzpatrick's win came after a tense final day, where he and Scheffler traded pars before the American's late surge.
Scheffler's runner-up finish marked his second consecutive second-place finish, following his performance at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex Fitzpatrick in the two-man team event.
