Pundit Jamie Carragher has pinpointed the pivotal role Manchester City's midfield duo, Rodri and Bernardo Silva, played in securing a crucial 2-1 victory over title rivals Arsenal. The win has narrowed the gap between the two teams to just three points, with City having a game in hand, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the Premier League season.
Carragher, speaking on Monday Night Football, lauded the exceptional performances of Rodri and Silva, stating they delivered one of the greatest pair performances he has witnessed in the Premier League. "The game was won in midfield," Carragher emphasized, highlighting how the duo's bravery and ingenuity in possession ultimately decided the outcome.
Initially, Arsenal's aggressive press, which saw them win possession in the final third six times within the opening 15 minutes, posed a significant challenge for Rodri and Silva. However, by dropping deeper to receive the ball, they effectively changed the dynamic of the game. This tactical adjustment allowed them to bypass Arsenal's press and play through their defense, showcasing real courage and composure on the ball.
Carragher noted, "Silva and Rodri ended up in the back four, they're the centre-backs and take the ball. We saw them lose it early on with Silva against Declan Rice.
It didn't stop them from getting it again. That's real courage." In contrast, Arsenal's midfielders, including Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, were unable to match the level of ingenuity and bravery displayed by their Manchester City counterparts.
Despite facing a four-man press, Arsenal opted to go long from goal kicks, a strategy that Carragher felt was indicative of their inability to play out from the back against City's press. The difference in courage and composure on the ball between the two teams was stark, with Carragher observing, "It's easy to have courage without the ball.
The courage to go and get the ball in your six-yard box off your goalkeeper in a game of this magnitude is absolutely outstanding." Furthermore, Carragher highlighted Zubimendi's role in Cherki's opening goal, where the Arsenal midfielder was initially successful in crowding out Cherki but then failed to recover quickly enough, allowing Cherki to score. In the build-up to City's second goal, Zubimendi's giveaway of possession proved costly, as it led to a counter-attack that resulted in the goal.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola praised the performances of Rodri and Silva, stating they have been very important in recent games, bringing huge personality, composure, and experience to the team. Guardiola also acknowledged the impact of player absences, including Rodri's 17-month layoff, and the contributions of other players in maintaining the team's position.
