Coventry has secured the Sky Bet Championship title after a resounding 5-1 victory over Portsmouth. Frank Lampard's team had already guaranteed their promotion to the Premier League following a 1-1 draw with Blackburn on April 17.

To claim the league title, Coventry needed to defeat Portsmouth at the Coventry Building Society Arena, which they accomplished in impressive fashion. This win marks Coventry's return to the top tier of English football for the first time in 25 years, starting from the 2026/27 season.

The newly crowned champions took the lead within 11 minutes when Haji Wright headed in Jack Rudoni's corner, a moment that Pompey goalkeeper Schmid should have prevented. Coventry almost scored another goal before halftime, with Bobby Thomas heading Rudoni's corner onto the crossbar. Portsmouth managed only one shot in the first 45 minutes and found themselves two goals down shortly after the break. Schmid's poor touch from a backpass allowed Ephron Mason-Clark to score, and Regan Poole inadvertently diverted Milan van Ewijk's cross into his own net.

Despite missing opportunities, including a glorious chance by Wright, Coventry continued to dominate. Rudoni hit the post with a low effort, and Wright missed the follow-up. Portsmouth briefly responded through Adrian Segecic, who capitalized on Rudoni's loose pass. However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly dashed as Victor Torp's pass played in Mason-Clark for his second goal.

Substitute Kaine Kesler-Hayden sealed the victory with a late goal, slotting in Rudoni's cross to secure Coventry's 90th league goal of the season. Frank Lampard expressed his delight, stating that the night was 'amazing' and that the team's performance was a testament to their strength and consistency. Sky Sports EFL Editor Simeon Gholam noted that this success caps Lampard's managerial career, considering his previous achievements with Derby, Chelsea, and Everton. A Coventry City fan, Matt Quigg, shared his emotional reaction, reflecting on the club's history and his personal journey as a fan, including experiencing relegations and points deductions.

He emphasized that the team's perseverance and dedication have made their return to the Premier League even sweeter.
