The match saw the oldest and youngest managers in the Championship face off, with 78-year-old Roy Hodgson pitting his experience against 33-year-old Tonda Eckert's youthful energy. Southampton's preparations were disrupted when captain Jack Stephens suffered an injury in the warm-up, and they struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages. Delano Burgzorg had a chance to put the visitors ahead within two minutes, but he lacked the composure to beat Daniel Peretz.

The hosts' disarray continued when Manning headed into his own goal in the fifth minute, but they eventually found their footing and began to create chances. Larin equalized just before the half-hour mark, scoring his seventh goal since joining on loan from Mallorca.

The second half saw Southampton start more assuredly, with Cameron Archer forcing Radek Vitek into a full dive to push behind. However, Bell restored the visitors' lead with a flicked header from a corner, only for Stewart to equalize again shortly after coming off the bench. That is credit to the players for what they have done over the last few weeks, but today proves there are no easy games in the Championship.' Bristol City boss Roy Hodgson was pleased with his team's performance, saying, 'I enjoyed watching it, I enjoyed watching our performance. I think the players should be proud. We kept them very much at arm's length for most of the game.
