A new ATP 250 tournament on grass is set to take place in Milan, Italy, beginning in 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, being considered as a possible host venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, which was previously held in Brussels.
The event is scheduled to occur every June, and while San Siro is a potential location, the final decision has not been made. The federation's president, Angelo Binaghi, mentioned that the tournament will likely be held in northern Italy due to climate reasons. Binaghi also referenced the Madrid Open's introduction of practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that San Siro could be a viable option.
Italy has previously hosted a grass-court WTA tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, the federation is set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna through next year, as well as the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open.
The federation is also planning to install a retractable roof at the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale, with construction starting after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia and completion expected by 2028. Binaghi expressed his ambition to make the Rome tournament a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is also aiming to become the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
