LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil has moved to alleviate concerns over the series' funding, stating that it is "funded through the season" and that the organization will "work tirelessly" to ensure its continuation. The comments come amidst speculation that the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), which backs the breakaway golf league, may withdraw its financial support.
The PIF has invested a reported $5 billion in the series since its inception in 2021. O'Neil's remarks were made in response to comments from LIV team captain Sergio Garcia, who alluded to funding being in place until 2030. However, O'Neil played down fears, saying that the series has commitments in place to continue operating and that it is not unusual for private equity-funded businesses to work on a season-by-season basis. Earlier in the week, O'Neil informed LIV staff that the current season would proceed as planned, without mentioning anything beyond that.
The PIF has not commented on the matter, but its governor, Yasir Al Rumayyan, recently stated that some investments are being reviewed due to economic feasibility and the Middle East conflict. Despite reports of an 'emergency meeting' in New York, no official decision has been made regarding the PIF's funding of LIV Golf. Some players, including Jon Rahm, have expressed confidence in the series' future, with Rahm stating that he is 'not too worried' about the rumors surrounding LIV's funding.
