Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season after a nail-biting play-off against world number one Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had begun the final day with a three-shot lead at Harbour Town Golf Links and initially extended his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes.
However, Scheffler mounted a late surge, closing with back-to-back birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure to win the play-off, firing his approach to 12 feet and sinking the birdie putt on the par-four 18th.
'I got off to a great start,' Fitzpatrick said. 'I knew Scottie would make a few birdies, so I had to hang in there.' This win lifts Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him the fourth Englishman to secure multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season. Fitzpatrick and Scheffler were neck and neck for much of the final round, with the former eventually emerging victorious.
Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, following his close second place at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in the two-man team event.
