English Football League (EFL) clubs have decided against implementing a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) challenge system for managers in the Championship. Following a demonstration by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) at the EFL's annual meeting, clubs provided feedback, resulting in the continuation of the current system, with only goal-line technology in place for the upcoming season.
The Premier League will retain VAR, despite recent surveys indicating its unpopularity among fans. A survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association found that 75% of fans oppose the use of VAR, and 90% believe it has not enhanced their matchday experience. Furthermore, 91% of fans feel that VAR has negatively impacted the spontaneity of goal celebrations, and 94% disagree that it makes watching football on television more enjoyable. Meanwhile, football's governing bodies have expanded VAR's capabilities, allowing for optional checks on corners and incorrectly awarded second yellow cards.
