A new ATP 250 grass-court event is slated to take place in Milan, Italy, starting from 2028, with the historic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to host this tournament, which was previously held in Brussels. The event is expected to be held annually in June, and while the San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, is a likely candidate, a final decision has not been made. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the choice of venue will depend on various factors, including climate.
Binaghi also mentioned that the introduction of practice courts within stadiums, as seen in the Madrid Open at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, could make the San Siro a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a grass-court WTA tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, the Italian Tennis Federation is hosting several prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. The federation is also working on installing a retractable roof at the Foro Italico in Rome, with the goal of potentially elevating the tournament to Grand Slam status in the future.
