Despite initial hopes that the injury was not severe, further examination revealed it to be more serious than anticipated. Alcaraz, a two-time champion in Barcelona, had been seeking to regain his world No 1 ranking but will now focus on recovery. His withdrawal comes as a setback in his preparation for the French Open, where he is the defending champion.
