John Cartwright has relinquished his position as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately. This move comes as Steve McNamara is set to take the reins from 2027, following an agreement between Hull FC and Warrington Wolves. Although Cartwright is stepping down from his coaching role, he remains an employee of Hull FC.
In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the head coach position for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue serving as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign.
Notably, McNamara's return to his boyhood club marks a significant homecoming, given his rise through the youth ranks and his subsequent distinguished playing career with over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. His coaching career spans two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as experience in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to its most successful period, achieving a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances.
Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, highlighting his exceptional coaching caliber and deep understanding of the club and the city. Similarly, Hull FC chairman Andrew Thirkill emphasized McNamara's experience, leadership, and high standards as critical factors in the team's future success, particularly in building a competitive squad for the Super League. This season, Sky Sports will broadcast every Super League game live, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches on Sky Sports+.
