Golf sensation Rory McIlroy and Formula One champion Lando Norris were among the big winners at the star-studded Laureus World Sport Awards on Monday. McIlroy, who completed his career Grand Slam in 2025, received the Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award. McIlroy expressed his gratitude, saying, "Receiving my second Laureus Award is a tremendous honor, both for me and for the sport of golf. Being recognized on a global stage alongside so many exceptional athletes is truly meaningful." He added, "Certain moments in your career stay with you forever, and winning The Masters is one of them.
Having a year like that recognized by Laureus is truly special. Completing the career Grand Slam was incredibly emotional, and it's even more significant because of the journey I've been on - the near misses, setbacks, and questions along the way.
I'm grateful this award acknowledges that journey." McIlroy also congratulated the nominees, saying, "I've taken inspiration from their stories, and I believe strongly in what Laureus stands for - the idea that sport has the power to change the world, as Nelson Mandela said." Meanwhile, Norris took home the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award after winning his maiden Formula One drivers' championship title. Norris said, "Thank you to the Laureus Academy for this honor. It's a privilege to be recognized by such legendary athletes. Winning the world championship is a dream come true, and I'm grateful to my team, who were also nominated for a Laureus Team of the Year Award." Other winners included Carlos Alcaraz, who was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, and Aryna Sabalenka, who received the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award.
