Norwich secured a hard-earned 2-1 win over Derby at Carrow Road, severely denting the Rams' hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs while keeping their own slim chances alive. Mohamed Toure opened the scoring for the Canaries just after the half-hour mark, having earlier missed a penalty, before Derby equalized through David Ozoh's strike following a defensive error early in the second half.
However, Norwich regained the lead on the hour mark as Liam Gibbs curled in a superb effort to keep his team's season barely alive. The Canaries now trail the top six by six points with two games remaining, relying on their goal difference to stay in contention, while Derby are four points behind Hull and Wrexham, needing two wins and significant favors from other teams to finish in the top six. Norwich had initially been awarded a penalty after just eight minutes when Amankwah Forson was fouled by Derry Murkin, but Toure's spot-kick was magnificently saved by Jacob Zetterstrom.
The home side continued to dominate, with Forson firing narrowly over before Toure made amends for his penalty miss by scoring his ninth goal in 11 appearances since joining Norwich in January. Zetterstrom then denied a low free-kick from Kenny McLean, while Derby's first effort on goal saw Sammie Szmodics fire high and wide from a decent position.
The visitors were gifted an equalizer nine minutes into the second half when skipper McLean was dispossessed, allowing Ozoh to fire home emphatically. However, the Rams' parity was short-lived as Paris Maghoma picked out Gibbs on the edge of the box, and the latter curled in a superb effort for his first goal of the season. Vladan Kovacevic made an excellent double save to deny Lars-Jorgen Salvesen and Carlton Morris as Derby sought a response, and the keeper made another crucial stop to keep out a goal-bound header from Morris in injury time, sealing Norwich's win. Norwich manager Philippe Clement praised his team's mental and tactical growth, stating that they deserved the result despite having to rely on Kovacevic's saves.
Derby boss John Eustace remained optimistic, emphasizing that the season is not over and that his team will go into their next game fully committed.
