Matt Fitzpatrick has claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late wobble to defeat world No 1 Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick began the final day with a three-shot lead and seemed in control after extending his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler surged back into contention with consecutive birdies, and Fitzpatrick's bogey on the final hole forced a play-off. The Englishman regained his composure, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole and sinking the birdie to secure his second RBC Heritage title in four years.
This win propels Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of No 3 and makes him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour wins in a single season. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second in as many weeks, following his close second place at The Masters. Fitzpatrick will now partner his brother Alex at the upcoming Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event.
