Matt Fitzpatrick has claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late stumble to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had started the day with a three-shot lead and seemed in control after extending his advantage with two birdies in the first three holes.
However, Scheffler mounted a late challenge, closing with consecutive birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole and sinking the birdie to secure the win. This victory propels Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour wins in a single season. Fitzpatrick's win was marked by a strong start, with a 10-foot birdie at the first hole, but he was unable to capitalize on the par-five second, allowing Scheffler to stay within three shots.
A 15-foot birdie at the third restored Fitzpatrick's four-shot cushion, but both players missed opportunities to extend their leads. The pair traded pars until Scheffler's six-foot birdie at the ninth took him to 16 under, with both players narrowly avoiding bogeys at the 10th. As the round progressed, Fitzpatrick and Scheffler remained locked in a tight battle, with neither able to gain a decisive advantage. Si Woo Kim briefly cut the lead to two shots with a birdie at the 15th, but Scheffler responded with a brilliant up-and-down from the sand to stay in contention.
Scheffler's late surge, including a 10-foot birdie at the 16th, set up a thrilling conclusion, but Fitzpatrick held his nerve in the play-off to claim the win. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second consecutive second-place result, following his performance at The Masters. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in the two-man team event.
