The week was marked by speculation surrounding the financial stability of the Saudi-funded league, with CEO Scott O'Neil addressing staff in a memo to reassure them that funding was secured through the end of the year, following reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) might be ending its financial support for the circuit. A power outage on Tuesday at the event in Mexico further fueled speculation, and the live stream was interrupted for two hours during the opening round. However, LIV Golf announced that it would return to the Chapultepec Golf Club next year.
Rahm, who failed to win last season despite claiming the points title, had previously experienced disappointment at Chapultepec in 2017 during a World Golf Championship. He left no doubt about the outcome this time, making a birdie on the reachable par-4 second hole and then scoring an eagle on the next, playing bogey-free throughout. Rahm expressed his surprise at the win, stating, 'If you had told me last Thursday that I would win by a six-shot margin, I wouldn't have believed you, considering how poorly I played.' Bryson DeChambeau withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, citing concerns about aggravating the injury further. DeChambeau, who was attempting to become the first player to win three consecutive times on the LIV Golf tour, was 16 shots behind Rahm when he withdrew.
He stated, 'I experienced discomfort in my wrist during yesterday's round and have decided to withdraw from the final round to prevent further injury.' DeChambeau hopes to be evaluated and return for the LIV Golf Virginia event on May 7-10, just before the PGA Championship. Rahm's team, Legion XIII, also secured their first win of the year. David Puig finished second with a 66, earning valuable world ranking points and virtually guaranteeing his spot in the PGA Championship.
Another strong finish in Virginia could potentially qualify him for the US Open. The next LIV Golf League event is scheduled to take place from May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington DC.
