Fitzpatrick had let a four-shot lead slip away during the final round, but he responded with a winning birdie putt on the first playoff hole to claim his fourth PGA Tour title.
The Englishman said that Parratt's words, 'we'd have taken this start of the week,' were similar to those used by Diamond during McIlroy's Masters win, and they helped to spur him on to victory. Fitzpatrick also praised the crowd for their support, saying that their chants and cheers motivated him to win, despite being in a hostile environment. Scottie Scheffler, who finished runner-up, also praised the fans, saying that they were 'cordial' in their support for him and did not cheer against Fitzpatrick.
The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event at TPC Louisiana.
