John Cartwright has stepped down as Hull FC's head coach, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to assume the role from 2027. Although Cartwright is no longer at the helm, he remains employed by Hull FC.
In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will oversee the team for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign.
Notably, McNamara will be returning to his boyhood club, where he began his junior career and went on to make over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996, including representing England and Great Britain internationally. With a distinguished coaching career spanning two decades, McNamara has worked with prominent teams such as Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as holding positions in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to its most successful period, marked by a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances.
Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, stating, 'We are thrilled to secure Steve's services. He is a coach of the highest caliber, with a deep understanding of this club and the city.' Andrew Thirkill, Hull FC chairman, added, 'We believe Steve is the ideal person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are delighted with his appointment. His experience, leadership, and standards will be crucial as we build a team capable of consistently competing at the top of Super League.' Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live this season, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches each week on Sky Sports+.
