John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to assume the role from the 2027 season. Although Cartwright is no longer head coach, he remains employed by Hull FC. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will lead the team for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, who will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the 2026 campaign, is set to return to his boyhood club where he had a distinguished playing career.
With over 160 senior appearances and experience playing for England and Great Britain, McNamara brings a wealth of knowledge to the position. His coaching career spans two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as time in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors.
During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final win and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC's chief executive, Richie Myler, expressed enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, citing his exceptional coaching caliber and deep understanding of the club and city.
Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed McNamara, highlighting his experience, leadership, and high standards as crucial in building a competitive team. Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live, including exclusive matches and those available on Sky Sports+.
