Wrexham's hopes for a Sky Bet Championship play-off spot have been rekindled following a decisive 2-0 home win over Stoke. The outcome was facilitated by Hull's draw with Birmingham, allowing Wrexham to narrow the gap to sixth place to two points with just three games left to play. Following consecutive defeats to Southampton and Birmingham, there was initial apprehension at the SToK Cae Ras.
However, this anxiety was alleviated by first-half goals from George Thomason and Josh Windass, scored within a minute of each other. For Stoke, this marked their sixth consecutive away loss, resulting in a drop to 17th place. Wrexham's manager, Phil Parkinson, made four changes to the lineup, including a notable switch in goal, with Wales international Danny Ward replacing Arthur Okonkwo.
Wrexham initiated the match with urgency, as if their season depended on it, with an early call for a penalty after Sam Smith was pushed by Bosun Lawal. Referee Adam Herczeg was uninterested, possibly due to the contact being outside the box. Thomason made a notable 50-yard run without challenge after taking the ball from Sorba Thomas, but his shot was directed straight at Gavin Bazunu.
Wrexham's momentum was temporarily hindered by Stoke's efficient offside trap. The breakthrough came when Lawal failed to clear George Dobson's free-kick, and Ollie Rathbone's effort was cleared off the line by Ben Pearson. Thomason's subsequent corner in the 31st minute sailed over Bazunu's head into the net, with Windass attempting to assist. Windass scored again just over a minute later, capitalizing on Aaron Cresswell's mistake to slot past Bazunu for his 13th league goal of the season.
After the break, Stoke displayed some ambition, with Dan Scarr blocking Bae Jun-ho's goal-bound effort. Wrexham almost secured a third goal when Thomason charged down the left and crossed, but Jesurun Rak-Sakyi's panicked clearance struck Smith and flew to safety. Smith headed over after Thomason and Windass combined, and Bazunu failed to collect. In the closing moments, Stoke came close to reducing the deficit when Lamine Cisse struck the crossbar from close range, and their final hopes dissipated when Million Manhoef drove wide.
Wrexham's Phil Parkinson stated, 'The aim has been to take this to the wire, and that's what we spoke to the lads about. Let's not hand the play-off place to the other teams.' Parkinson also expressed his intention to address the team's performance levels and accountability. With the win, Wrexham looks to Oxford for their next match, aiming to sustain their momentum until the end of the season.
