Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 caps to his name, Launchbury has had a storied career, having represented his country from 2012 to 2022 and securing three Six Nations titles, as well as participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.
Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins' website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He reflected on his time in the sport, saying, "I've been so fortunate to represent the teams I have," and thanked his teammates, past and present, for the friendships they have built.
Launchbury acknowledged that rugby has given him more than he ever could have imagined, including a sense of purpose, lasting friendships, and unforgettable memories. He noted that his body is telling him it needs a break, and while he would like to remain involved in the sport, he is looking forward to spending more time with his family, particularly watching his children grow up.
