John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to assume the role in 2027. An agreement has been reached between Hull FC and Warrington Wolves for McNamara's appointment. Although Cartwright is no longer head coach, he remains an employee of Hull FC. Assistant coach Andy Last will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the current season.
McNamara will continue in his role as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves until the end of the 2026 campaign. A renowned coach, McNamara returns to his boyhood club, where he began his career and made over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. His coaching career spans two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as experience in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors.
During his time with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, citing his exceptional coaching caliber and deep understanding of the club and city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed McNamara's appointment, highlighting his experience, leadership, and high standards as crucial in building a competitive team.
