The Englishman's caddie, Daniel Parratt, used a phrase similar to one used by McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond, during his Masters win, telling Fitzpatrick that they would have taken their position at the start of the week. Fitzpatrick had taken a three-shot lead into the final day and was briefly four clear, but a late stumble and back-to-back birdies from Scottie Scheffler forced a play-off.
