A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament is set to take place in Milan, Italy, beginning in 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, which was previously held in Brussels. The event will be held annually in June, and while the San Siro is a strong contender to host it, a final decision has not been made yet. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the tournament will likely be held in northern Italy due to climate reasons.
The San Siro, with its massive capacity of over 75,000, could be an ideal location, following in the footsteps of other stadiums like Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, which is introducing practice courts. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also hosting other prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. Additionally, work on a retractable roof for the Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico is scheduled to start soon, with the aim of completing it in time for the 2028 edition.
Binaghi has also expressed his ambition to make the Rome Masters a fifth Grand Slam tournament, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells.
