John Cartwright has relinquished his position as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, as the club prepares for Steve McNamara's arrival in 2027. McNamara, who will take the reins from next season, has been announced as the new head coach of Hull FC for the 2027 Betfred Super League season.
In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the role of head coach for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, who began his career at Hull FC as a junior and went on to make over 160 senior appearances, will return to his boyhood club after a distinguished coaching career. His experience includes stints with Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as time in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with the Dragons, McNamara led the team to a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield success, and two Super League Grand Final appearances.
Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, stating, "We are thrilled to have Steve on board. He is a coach of the highest caliber, with a deep understanding of this club and the city." Chairman Andrew Thirkill added, "We believe Steve is the ideal person to lead Hull FC into our next phase, and we are excited about his appointment. His experience, leadership, and standards will be crucial as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League."
