However, the Englishman regained his composure to sink a decisive birdie on the first extra hole and claim the title.
The win propels Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and makes him only the fourth Englishman to achieve multiple PGA Tour victories in the same season. Scheffler's runner-up finish is his second consecutive near-miss, following his narrow defeat at The Masters last weekend.
