Fitzpatrick Credits Caddie's McIlroy-Inspired Advice for Play-Off Victory

English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick has revealed that his caddie's words of encouragement, reminiscent of those used by Rory McIlroy during his 2025 Grand Slam win, helped him secure a dramatic play-off victory at the RBC Heritage on Sunday. Fitzpatrick had let a four-shot lead slip away during the final round at Harbour Town Golf Links, but he rebounded by firing his approach on the first extra play-off hole to within 12 feet and rolling in a winning birdie putt to claim his fourth PGA Tour title. The victory marked Fitzpatrick's second win in as many starts, and he acknowledged the role his caddie, Daniel Parratt, played in his success. Parratt had told Fitzpatrick that they would have taken their position at the start of the week, echoing the words used by McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond, during the Masters. Fitzpatrick joked that he felt like he was in a similar situation to McIlroy and that the advice helped him stay focused. Despite a late stumble, Fitzpatrick held on to win the play-off against world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who had forced a fourth play-off in five years at the event with back-to-back birdies. Fitzpatrick attributed his win to 'a lot of grit' and said he felt like he was in a good spot, even after a poor three-putt on the second hole. He also praised the atmosphere at the RBC Heritage, saying that the crowd motivated him to victory, even as they cheered heavily in Scheffler's favor. The Englishman poked fun at American Ryder Cup fans, saying they had short memories, given that the US had lost the previous Ryder Cup in October. However, he added that the crowd's energy was amazing and that he loved the atmosphere. Scheffler also hailed the fans, saying they were cordial and appreciative of his play. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a two-man team event at TPC Louisiana.
