Sinner Regains Top Spot in ATP Rankings with Monte Carlo Victory

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No 1 spot after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Sinner navigated the challenging conditions in Monaco more effectively than his opponent, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win to overtake Alcaraz in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not reach the exceptional heights seen in previous encounters between the two tennis stars, it was marked by twists and turns as Sinner recovered from a deficit in the second set. This victory marks Sinner's first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extends his unbeaten run to 22 matches at Masters tournaments. Sinner expressed his delight at regaining the top spot, stating, 'The result is amazing. Returning to No 1 means a great deal to me.' He also acknowledged that his ranking is secondary to his overall performance, adding, 'I'm very happy to have won a major trophy on this surface for the first time.' Alcaraz congratulated Sinner on his achievement, saying, 'It's impressive what you're accomplishing right now. Winning the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo is incredible.' The 17th meeting between the two tennis superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the windy and overcast conditions. Alcaraz initially broke Sinner but was unable to maintain his lead, and Sinner ultimately prevailed in the tie-break. In the second set, Alcaraz struggled to hold serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and secure the win. Sinner and Alcaraz may face each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also compete, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3. Andreeva praised Potapova as an 'amazing fighter and an even better person' during the presentation ceremony. The Russian player had to come back from a set down to claim her second WTA title and fourth of her career. Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the support she received from the crowd, saying, 'Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me.'
