Joe Launchbury, a veteran England lock, has confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the conclusion of the current season. With 70 international caps under his belt between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Following his move to Quins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, he made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on Harlequins' website, Launchbury reflected, "The time has come to step away from rugby, and I feel it's the right moment to do so." He expressed his gratitude to his teammates, past and present, highlighting the strong bonds and memories forged throughout his career.
Launchbury acknowledged that rugby has provided him with a life filled with purpose, friendships, and lasting memories, but feels his body needs a break. He hopes to remain involved in the sport in some capacity and is looking forward to spending more time with his family, particularly watching his children grow up.
