Hull FC has confirmed that John Cartwright has vacated his position as head coach, effective immediately. Steve McNamara is set to succeed him, taking over the role from the 2027 Betfred Super League season.
Although Cartwright is no longer at the helm, he remains employed by the club. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the head coach responsibilities for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue in his capacity as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves until the end of the 2026 campaign. McNamara, who began his playing career at Hull FC, rising through the youth ranks before making over 160 senior appearances and representing England and Great Britain, will return to his boyhood club.
With a distinguished coaching career spanning two decades, including tenures at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as stints in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors, McNamara is highly regarded in the sport. During his time at Catalans Dragons, he led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, citing his exceptional coaching caliber and deep understanding of the club and the city.
Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed the appointment, emphasizing McNamara's experience, leadership, and standards as crucial in building a competitive team. Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live, including exclusive matches and those available on Sky Sports+.
