Paul Merson has strongly criticized Chelsea's recent performance, labeling it as 'cringeworthy' after their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at home. He believes that the team 'capitulates' when they fall behind and questions the decision to drop Enzo Fernandez, citing it as 'crazy' given his crucial role in the team. With Chelsea now sixth in the league and four points behind the top five, Merson thinks manager Liam Rosenior is under significant pressure ahead of their upcoming game against Manchester United.
Merson expressed his thoughts on Chelsea's situation, saying, 'It's a huge issue if they don't qualify for the Champions League, but for me, yesterday was cringeworthy. I'm asking the question 'why'? Why would you ban Enzo Fernandez for two games? He's your best passer of the ball, the one who can create.' Merson also discussed Tottenham's relegation crisis, stating, 'I didn't see anything to suggest they can get out of trouble.
No disrespect to Sunderland, but they shouldn't be so comfortable in a game this important.' Additionally, he shared his thoughts on Newcastle's current situation, saying, 'It's hard at the moment because Newcastle have been playing for so much over the last few years, won a cup for the first time, playing in the Champions League, and now they are drifting around mid-table.'
