Mayer: Athletes Often Face Harsh Criticism from the Public

Mikaela Mayer, a three-weight world champion, has spoken about the challenges she faces in her sport, including the harsh criticism from the public. 'Boxing is unique in that it involves a lot of trash talk, and then we get in the ring and punch each other,' she said. Mayer has experienced her fair share of setbacks, including a split decision loss to Alycia Baumgardner four years ago. She recalled how difficult it was to cope with the pressures of her career and the hate she received online after the loss. 'It's like, because we're the ones talking trash, they feel they can talk trash too, so it's definitely a struggle because you're dealing with your own pain and you're trying to keep yourself motivated,' Mayer told Sky Sports. Despite the challenges, Mayer has learned to navigate the situation with the help of her team and has come out stronger. She advises young athletes not to let criticism hold them back and to stay strong mentally. Mayer also emphasized the importance of finding a unique selling point to stand out in the sport. 'It's not good enough just to be a good boxer,' she said. 'You have to look the part, promote yourself, and find something that separates you from everybody else.'
