Mercedes Intensifies Efforts to Enhance Race Starts

According to George Russell, the Mercedes team is diligently working to improve their race starts, a crucial aspect they aim to perfect ahead of the Formula 1 season resuming in Miami. Despite achieving four front-row lockouts in the initial three Grands Prix and Sprint, neither Russell nor his teammate has managed to secure the lead after the first lap. Although the team's starts have been their most significant weakness, they have demonstrated sufficient pace to regain the lead and win the first three races. Ferrari, on the other hand, has excelled in starts this season, thanks to their compact turbo, which enables quicker spin-up times and facilitates finding the ideal launch window. Drivers can practice starts during free practice sessions at Grand Prix weekends but lack other opportunities to hone their launch skills. Russell emphasized that while practice opportunities for race starts are limited, the team has been meticulously analyzing data to address this significant flaw. 'A tremendous amount of work is being done behind the scenes,' Russell stated. The team has been utilizing simulator days to scrutinize the first three races and prepare for the upcoming ones, including the Miami and Montreal sprint races. Although they are currently participating in Pirelli tire testing in Germany, they are not permitted to practice starts during this period. The team is dedicated to working tirelessly behind the scenes, examining data, and exploring solutions to enhance their race starts, an area where they have fallen short. Formula 1 action resumes with the Miami Grand Prix on May 1-3, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.
