Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 caps under his belt, accumulated between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Quins in 2023, following a stint with Toyota Verblitz in Japan, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his involvement has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement released on Harlequins' website, Launchbury reflected, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season.
It's been an incredible journey, with the privilege of wearing the England shirt 70 times, and representing esteemed teams like Wasps and Harlequins." Launchbury expressed his gratitude to his teammates, both past and present, highlighting the lasting bonds and memories forged throughout his career. "Rugby has given me more than I could have ever imagined - a career, a sense of purpose, and friendships that will endure forever," he said. Citing the physical toll of the sport, Launchbury acknowledged that his body is in need of a break. While he hopes to remain involved in the game, his immediate priority is to spend quality time with his family and watch his children grow up.
