Milan's Iconic San Siro Stadium May Host ATP 250 Grass-Court Event from 2028

Starting in 2028, Italy is set to host a grass-court ATP 250 tournament in Milan, with the historic San Siro stadium being a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to a 250-level ATP Tour event, previously held in Brussels in October. The tournament is expected to take place in June, with the San Siro, which boasts a capacity of over 75,000 and is home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, being considered as the likely host. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the decision on the venue has not been finalized, but northern Italy is the preferred location due to climate reasons. Binaghi drew parallels with the Madrid Open, which is introducing practice courts at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that the San Siro could be an option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also hosting other prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, as well as the Rome Masters on clay before the French Open. Additionally, plans are underway to install a retractable roof at the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale, with work scheduled to commence after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia and be completed in time for the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to elevate the tournament in Rome to the status of a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is also aiming to make history by becoming the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
