Rahm Secures Victory in Mexico as LIV Golf Faces Uncertainty

Jon Rahm concluded a tumultuous week on the LIV Golf tour with a resounding victory, carding a seven-under 64 on Sunday to claim a six-shot win at the LIV Golf Mexico City event, marking his second triumph this year on the Saudi-backed circuit. Amidst speculation surrounding the financial stability of the league, CEO Scott O'Neil issued a memo to staff assuring them that funding was secure through the end of the year, in an effort to alleviate growing concerns about the league's future. This move was in response to reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) was considering withdrawing its financial support for the tour. The event in Mexico was marred by a power outage on Tuesday and a two-hour streaming outage during the opening round, further fueling speculation about the league's stability. However, LIV Golf announced that it would return to Chapultepec Golf Club next year, providing some sense of continuity. Rahm, who had gone winless on the LIV Golf tour last season despite claiming the points title, experienced a change in fortune this time around, making a birdie on the par-4 second hole and following it up with an eagle on the next, to play bogey-free and seal his victory. The win marked a significant turnaround for Rahm, who had expressed disappointment with his performance the previous week. Bryson DeChambeau, who was attempting to become the first player to win three consecutive events on the LIV Golf tour, withdrew from the final round due to a wrist injury, citing concerns about aggravating the condition. DeChambeau, who was 16 shots behind Rahm at the time of his withdrawal, stated that he would undergo evaluation and hoped to participate in the LIV Golf Virginia event on May 7-10. Rahm's victory was also a boost for his Legion XIII team, which claimed its first win of the year. David Puig finished second, carding a 66 to earn valuable world ranking points and virtually assure his participation in the PGA Championship, with another strong finish potentially securing his spot in the US Open. The next LIV Golf League event is scheduled to take place from May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington DC.
