Dobey Dominates Players Championship as Humphries' Struggles Persist

Luke Humphries' recent slump continued with a disappointing last-16 exit at the Players Championship 9 in Wigan, while Chris Dobey claimed his second title of 2026 with a convincing victory. Just four days after a quarter-final loss to Jonny Clayton in Brighton, which jeopardized his Premier League finals hopes, Humphries was defeated 6-4 by Andrew Gilding. Gilding then overcame Beau Greaves 6-3, following her historic quarter-final appearance, before being eliminated by eventual champion Dobey in the semi-finals. Dobey's march to the title included a 6-1 win over Luke Woodhouse and a 6-3 victory over Richard Veenstra, setting up a final against Justin Hood, which he won 8-4 to secure the £15,000 prize. Despite a slow start, Dobey regained control of the final, claiming six of the next seven legs. A 105.28 average in the final helped Dobey overcome Hood's spirited challenge, which included a 102.91 average. 'My goal now is to replicate this form on TV and in European Tour events,' said Dobey. 'I've been playing well throughout the year, and I'm eager to add more titles to my collection.' The tournament also saw a nine-darter from Thomas Lovely in his round three loss to Woodhouse. The Premier League Darts schedule continues, with defending champion Luke Humphries facing an uphill battle to retain his title.
