Garcia Addresses LIV Golf Shutdown Rumors
Amidst swirling speculation surrounding the future of LIV Golf, Sergio Garcia stated that he cannot reveal anything beyond what players were initially assured. The rumors began circulating on social media and were later reported by The Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times, suggesting that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which funds LIV Golf, may be reconsidering its support. Garcia emphasized that players will only listen to information provided by Yasir Al-Rumayyan, LIV Golf's chairman, who assured them of his support at the start of the year. The situation has caused confusion among LIV's players, with team captains, including Garcia, not being informed of any imminent announcements. Meanwhile, Sky Sports News chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol believes that Saudi Arabia is reevaluating its investments in sports, seeking a return on their investments and adopting a more business-oriented approach. LIV Golf, which was launched in 2021 as a rival to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, has experienced a division within professional golf, with some notable players defecting to the breakaway tour. The league has undergone changes, including an increase in prize funds and a switch to 74-hole tournaments, in an attempt to secure Official World Golf Ranking points.
