England Faces Scotland with Debutant Demelza Short Amidst Injury Crisis

England Women's Rugby head coach John Mitchell remains optimistic despite a lengthy list of absent players, stating that the team will adapt to the challenges. Mitchell has made five changes to the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Scotland, including giving 19-year-old Demelza Short her debut at blindside flanker. Other changes include Zoe Harrison at fly-half, Emma Sing at full-back, Abi Burton at lock, and Maud Muir at prop. The team also sees Ellie Kildunne shifting to the left wing and Maddie Feaunati moving to No 8 due to Alex Matthews' shoulder injury. Matthews joins a long list of injured players, including Hannah Botterman, Morwenna Talling, Natasha Hunt, May Campbell, and Tatyana Heard, who are all ruled out for the tournament. Additionally, Zoe Stratford, Abbie Ward, Rosie Galligan, and Lark Atkin-Davies are missing due to pregnancy. According to Mitchell, 'We've had to adapt to a number of changes with injuries to team-mates who are hugely valued within the group, but that's part of the culture we're building.' He added, 'It creates opportunities for others to step up and highlights the depth we're continuing to grow, both for now and the future.' England's defense coach Sarah Hunter views the current situation as an opportunity to build for the next World Cup in 2029, stating, 'It's almost good that we're having this situation now so that we can grow and develop some of the younger players coming through who might be there in four years' time.' The starting XV includes Emma Sing, Jess Breach, Megan Jones, Helena Rowland, Ellie Kildunne, Zoe Harrison, Lucy Packer, Kelsey Clifford, Amy Cokayne, Maud Muir, Abi Burton, Lilli Ives Campion, Demelza Short, Sadia Kabeya, and Maddie Feaunati.
