Fitzpatrick Edges Scheffler in Thrilling PGA Tour Play-off

Matt Fitzpatrick claimed his second PGA Tour victory of the season, overcoming a late stumble to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the RBC Heritage. Fitzpatrick had started the final day with a three-shot lead and extended his advantage with two birdies in his first three holes. However, Scheffler mounted a late challenge, closing with back-to-back birdies to force a play-off after Fitzpatrick bogeyed the final hole. The Englishman regained his composure, firing his approach to 12 feet on the first extra hole and sinking the birdie to secure his second RBC Heritage win in four years. The victory propelled Fitzpatrick to a career-high world ranking of third and made him the fourth Englishman to win multiple PGA Tour titles in the same season. Fitzpatrick's win was marked by a strong start, with a 10-foot birdie at the first hole, but he was unable to capitalize on the par-five second, allowing Scheffler to stay within three shots. The pair traded pars throughout the round, with Fitzpatrick holing a 15-foot birdie at the third to restore a four-shot buffer. Scheffler refused to give up, producing a brilliant up and down from the sand at the 15th to stay in contention. Despite a clunky chip on the final hole, Fitzpatrick composed himself to win the play-off, with Scheffler finishing as runner-up for the second consecutive week. The PGA Tour now heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Fitzpatrick will partner his brother Alex in the two-man team event.
